Wordpress is without a doubt the best blogging tool on the planet, especially if you host it yourself. The thing that makes it so great is its extensibility.

I have selected the following plugins for their ability to enhance your blogs functionality and ’stickiness’, none of them are cosmetic. All of these are being used on this site right now:

1. Share This

This awesome plugin lets your visitors share a post/page with others. It supports e-mail and posting to all of the most popular social bookmarking sites like Digg, Technorati, Reddit etc. If you are using this then there really is no need for any other social link plugin. Visit Share This.

2. Evermore

With this you can abbreviate all posts when viewed on multiple post pages, eg. your home page. Adds a theme dependant ‘Read More’ style link below or above the post. Essentially, it saves your readers from having to scroll down forever to the last post. Visit Evermore.

3. Feedsmith

This plugin detects all ways to access your original WordPress feeds and redirects them to your FeedBurner feed so you can track every possible subscriber. A much more practical and stylish way to manage your feeds and is guaranteed to get you a larger readership. Requires Feedburner account. Visit Feedsmith.

4. Analytics

This plugin makes it simple to add Google Analytics to your WordPress blog and/or your BBPress forum. Easy installation but requires you to have a Google Analytics account. But you have one already, don’t you? Visit Analytics.

5. Jeromes Keywords

Allows keywords to be associated with each post. These keywords can be used for page meta tags, included in posts for site searching or linked like Technorati tags. Compared to the plethora of other keyword plugins, this is probably the simplest yet it is still extremely powerful. Visit Jeromes Keywords.

6. Spam Karma 2

Ultimate Spam Killer for WordPress. Sits as a resident at the bottom of your page, devours spam for fun and lists its tally. Nearly all of the setting can be customized including the ‘warning message’ displayed in your footer. Visit Span Karma 2.

7. Subscribe to comments

Allows readers to receive notifications of new comments that are posted to an entry via a simple check-box. This will undoubtedly garner more interest and will bring readers back to your site for more. Visit STC.

8. db Backup

One that you will always wish you had installed if disaster were to ever strike, this gives you an on-demand backup of your WordPress database. Can be configured to send the backed up database to your inbox as an attachment or to store it in your web-space. You can also configure which database tables are saved that you recieve a streamlined file. Visit db Backup.

9. Sitemap Generator

Every site should have a searchable sitemap and unfortunately Wordpress does not do this by default. This plugin generates a fully customizable sitemap which is very SEO friendly and you can define how the sitemap is structured within the options page. Visit Sitemap Generator.

10. What would Seth Godin Do

This is an absolute gem. Displays a custom welcome message to new visitors and uses cookies that disable the message if your customer is…not new! Visit WWSGD.
