Nothing grips me more than a slow machine. This is mainly because I get swamped by calls from friends with the number one computer-related question - “My computer is running really slowly, how can I speed it up?” Well apart from the obvious hardware upgrades (processor/RAM/graphics/new computer) it just might be that your hard drive is more clogged up than a fat man’s arteries on a Dutch holiday - get it!

So here’s a quick check-list of what I do every once in a while to sort my hard drive out (Nb. I use and will use for a while to come, XP):

1. Use CCleaner. Gets into the parts that others can’t reach.

2. Remove any unwanted programs from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

3. Whilst in Add/Remove Programs click Add/Remove Windows Components on the left and get rid of anything useless or unused.

4. Use MSCONFIG to find and remove anything that starts up with Windows that is not really needed. Use with caution.

5. Run Spybot Search and Destroy. Its the best and its free. Enough said.

6. Run Reg Clean from Microsoft. Ages old but still can find and fix some registry problems. Its free.

7. Defragment the drive. Puts all your files in the right order.

Job done. It may just save me having to wear this t-shirt all the time.
