Millions of people today own digital cameras and out of those I bet nearly all would like to take better photographs. When I started taking photography seriously about 2 years ago I did not realise that there were so many good web-based articles and books available. The subject can be quite daunting to the novice snapper as some aspects can be extremely technical, so when you find a clear and concise tutorial that explains everything that you need to know, then it is like a breath of fresh air (it is to me, anyway). The following is a short summary of the best books and websites available for those wishing to learn digital photography.
First of all, get across to Photo Secrets by Andrew Hudson and begin to wade through this huge repository. It contains masses of links to other photography resources, photography tips, photo location guides and links to over 1000 books on the subject. Put aside a weekend at least before digging through this site.
If you are going to get one and one book only, then it has to be The Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby. It covers all of the fundamentals and essentials in an easy to understand format. The second half of the book concentrates on 1-2 page ‘Quick-Fixes’;- If you want to get THIS SHOT then DIAL THIS onto your camera type stuff. It doesn’t get any simpler than that and no prior knowledge is assumed. All of this is fine if you can put up with Kelbys awful sense of humour. He is also resident Photoshop expert at Photoshop User TV and Kelby Training amongst other things.
In the same vain, the emerging website iDigitalPhoto by Tom Ang and Markus Urban is an ever-growing resource for people who want to learn more about photography. It contains many useful tutorials including the hugely popular Improve Your Photos 60 Seconds at a Time. There are opportunities for you to submit your own work into the Masterclass and use the seminal Dictionary of Photography and Digital Imaging. Tom Ang is a published author of many works including the bestselling How To Photograph Absolutely Everything.
If you haven’t already heard of it, photographers.co.uk is a place that is definitely worth checking out. The section on photography tips is huge, covering subjects like weddings, architecture, art, equipment, angles, landscapes, nature, night, portraits, sport, still life, underwater, wildlife and loads more. Users can also upload their own experiences.
For a more interactive experience, you could try Tips From The Top Floor, a podcast website that brings you non-techy tips that you can put to use immediately. It covers everything from image composition to post processing. No matter if you use a digital point-and-shoot or an expensive digital SLR. Tips for the beginner as well as the professional photographer. It also has a wonderful community, a photo gallery, tips for Adobe Photoshop and a listener-managed Knowledge Library.
